Toklat: If I Never Get to Heaven
Toklat: If I Never Get to Heaven
is a true family-biography-in-place.
In 1949, Stuart and Isabel Mace
went eleven miles up a dead-end valley
surrounded by wilderness. With five
children and five dozen husky sled
dogs, they created a home they called
Toklat. Over the next six decades
the world came to their table.
This is their story.

"Ashcroft" by Douglas Franklin
"For a moment or a meal, an
hour or an evening, many
people stood with the gifts of
the good land on a hanging
table, before the gurgling
waters of Devaney Creek, by
the crackling embers of the
council fire, or in a twelve-foot
wooden sled swaying toward
Star Peak behind a team of
panting huskies."
~Trevor A. Washko
"Ancient philosophies describe a fifth
essence, latent in all things. It was the
highest essence, after the elements of
earth, air, fire, and water. This
quintessence, literally meaning fifth
essence, was believed to be the
substance of heavenly bodies; it was
the purest and most concentrated
essence of a thing. The quintessence
of something is the center; it is the
core, the heart, the kernel, the marrow,
the meat, the nub, the pith, the root, the
spirit, the soul ~ the source. In place, it
is heaven on earth, and on paper, it is
beyond words."
