The Earth is Enough

"Just as the day gained the
mountains, poured over them like
a flood of warming light, the trout
hit, not a violent strike, but a
delicate tug, a suspicious bump.
Until I felt its weight on the line,
bending the rod tip, I doubted
that I had a fish at all. I saw it
clearly and was in awe of it, a small
rainbow trout, but tenacious as
the Goliaths of its tribe, a
creature of beauty and power.
On taking my small No. 18 black
gnat, the trout ran downstream
toward Cody's Rock and
suddenly jumped, its supple body
arching in the morning sun so that
the light flashed brilliantly off its
iridescent flanks, displaying a
stripe the deep strawberry color
of fresh salmon flesh. Another
run, across and farther
down-stream, and I gave it more
line because I wanted the moment
never to end, wanted never to
be separated from the trout, the
stream, the endless range of
morning light."
